Frequently Asked Questions

What, exactly, is a blook?

A blook is a book with content that was developed in a significant way from material originally presented on a blog, webcomic or other website. This material includes the website's characters, themes, ideas or outline that ends up getting published as a printed book.

Scores of blooks have already been published, both by traditional publishers and self-publishers. Indeed, traditional publishing houses, ever in search of the next big name author, have begun to mine blogs and websites for new talent. In the world of self-publishing, more and more content is being developed first online. It is becoming ever easier for bloggers and other independent web publishers to make the transition into print by using web-based publishing services.

The launch of the original Blooker Prize coincided with the 450th anniversary of Gutenberg's invention of moveable type, and it offered fresh evidence that the oft-touted rumor of the death of books is greatly exaggerated.

The full dictionary definition of a blook is as follows:

blook n. blook. A printed and bound book, based on a blog (cf. web log) or website; a new stage in the life-cycle of content, if not a new category of content and a new dawn for the book itself. cf. The Blooker Prize, ("The Blooker"), a literary prize, founded 2005, for blooks. [der. Eng. book, a bound collection of sheets of paper; blog (abbrev. web log, an internet journal, diary or personal website)]

Why the Blooker Prize?

The Blooker Prize is the world's fastest-growing provider of self-publishing technology and services — and the simplest place to turn web content into a blook. We want to raise the visibility of the growing number of talented writers who are using blogs and websites to develop quality content.

(The prize's name is also intended as an affectionate nod to another important literary prize.)

Can I enter more than one blook?

No, only one qualified entry per family or household is allowed.

Can I submit my e-book?

No, we only accept printed, bound books.

Can I submit my self-published book?

Yes.

Do I have to be a US resident to enter?

No, anyone can enter from anywhere in the world, as long as the blooks they submit are printed in English and meet all other criteria for eligibility (see Rules).

How do I enter my blook?

Full details will be provided when the dates for the next Blooker Prize are announced.

Is there an entry fee?

No, all that is required to enter is one (1) copy of the blook and a completed entry form.

Will I get my books back after the contest is over?

No, all submissions become property of The Blooker Prize and will not be returned.

What's the prize?

The prize money totals US $15,000 (approximately £8,175 or €11,800). The winner in each category will be awarded US $2,500, with an additional US $7,500 grand prize going to the one blook deemed Overall Winner.

Who are this year's judges?

Check out the Judges page.

How are the winners selected?

All submissions will be evaluated by an independent review committee. This committee will select a short-list of approximately five (5) finalist blooks per category. After the short-lists have been selected, the panel of judges will choose one winner from each category, one of which will be deemed Overall Winner. Finalists and winners will be selected based on the quality of the writing and the general excellence of the content. Preferred submissions will be those entries that lift the subject matter out of the routine category and give the reader greater insight into the topic covered. The Overall Winner will be the blook judged to have shown to the greatest extent the qualities outlined above.
